If you are a guitar player you probably know what an iRig is. It allows you to hook up a electrified musical instrument to a computer or tablet. If you have ever looked into it, you know that an iRig is a somewhat pricey item, about $100 on the Apple store.

There are alternatives. I have stumbled across a working solution for the iPad using the cable from the Rocksmith video game (I am presuming that you of course already own Rocksmith!) and the camera connector for the iPad. You can pick up a connector for $29 from Apple. Just plug the camera connector into the iPad, plug the Rocksmith cable into the camera connector, plug the other end in your guitar, fire up GarageBand. In GarageBand hit the Instruments button and select Guitar Amp. To hear yourself while you play you will have to turn the Monitor setting on in the settings for the Amp. Click the guitar plug in the upper left corner and slide the Monitor setting to On. Now you can select your amp and pedal configuration and shred till the cows come home!

I have been informed that there will be no Myers Reunion held this year (2013). I believe that the intention at this time is to hold the reunion next year in 2014. Watch this space for more details I get them.

Ingredients

  • Guitar
  • iThing (iPhone or iPad)
  • ASD app for iThing
  • Tab for target song at ultimate-guitar.com
  • Song to play from your iTunes library

Directions

  • Go to ultimate-guitar.com and find the guitar tab for the song you want to play. I have only recently started to use tab and found it very quick to pick up – much easier than traditional sheet music. You can find tutorials at the site on reading tab.
  • If you don’t already own the song, go to iTunes and buy a copy.
  • Import the song into ASD. This app (short for Automatic Slow Downer) allows you to play a song in its original key as slow as 25% of the original speed.
  • Start the song in ASD at 25% speed for the first try.
  • Switch back to the browser with the song tab.
  • Grab your guitar and play along!

The range of a standard N class router is just a little to small for your average house. Our house has the added complication of an extension. This means that the signal has to go through several walls including the brick wall on the original house wall and from first to the second floor. Coverage at the front of the house was causing much gnashing of teeth with really sluggish connections, to the point that there were 30 second delays in feedback between double clicking a file and the file opening.

You can get repeaters that will repeat the signal, but these usually cost more than $100.
So off I went to Future Shop, purchased a $33 N router and 100 feet of cat 5 wire at Canada Computers. Total cost is around $50. Turns out the hardest part is pulling the cast 5 cable through the divide between the old and new sections of the house.

I used this blog post as a guide.
So now we have good coverage throughout the house!

This year’s reunion will be held next weekend, Sunday August 12 at Cambell Conservation Area in Alvinston. Kim and Dan Myers are this years hosts.

So, I am going to try updating this blog more often. At least more than once a year. This is the first post of what hopefully will be several more.
